After devoting half of tonight’s Episode to the State of the Union review, Nightline switched moods quite dramatically with a segment on Eckhart Tolle.
“Fire and brimstone his message is not,” Terry Moran starts, “for spiritual leader Eckhart Tolle his path to enlightenment has been paved with calm and simplicity. Focused on experiencing the here and now rather than dwelling on the past or the future, it’s a core lesson resonating with all types of people around the world.”
The show mentions Tolle’s obligatory celebrity following (a requirement for any good spiritual teacher nowadays- or rather every news segment.)
Tolle explains how he stays present by “accepting what IS and that’s why life has become so simple.”
Reporter Dan Harris (nervously?) asks Tolle, “What if you someone cuts you off while driving?” (Making me wonder if Dan was cut off on the way to the interview?)
“It simply is a gust of air why would I mind a gust of air?” Tolle replies with a smile.
Dan Harris goes on to ask, “What if I ask you a ton of really annoying questions?” and Tolle laughs and says “it’s fine.” (Did Tolle really just affirm to this guy that he IS annoying?
)
Tolle goes on to explain the ego, repetitive thinking, focusing on negative thoughts and judgments. He says that people live their entire lives looking for the next moment, always searching for something else. He tells Dan there is truth in all of the major religions at their core.
Then cut to that cute Geico commercial with the money that has eyes: “I always feel like someone is watching me.”
