India says: Hey Westerners, Stop Trying to Patent Yoga!

by darla on February 23, 2009

The debate over the patentability of ancient yoga asanas takes a turn today as India assembles a team of Hindu gurus and scientists to identify all ancient yoga asanas, which have been practiced in India for around 6,000 years. They are disturbed by Western yoga teachers that have filed and received patents for ancient asanas, claiming they invented them and trying to prevent others from freely practicing yoga.

On behalf of Western yogis not filing patents but who love yoga and are grateful for it, all I can say is, “How embarrassing.”
